Obituary for James M. Hanley (July 11, 1932 - May 29, 2008)
James M. Hanley of the Holiday City section of Berkeley Twp., died on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at his home. Mr. Hanley was born July 11, 1932 in Jersey City, NJ to the late James Joseph Hanley and Mary Anne Regan. He was the second child, the first being his late sister, Mary Mulligan. He graduated Dickinson High School in 1950 and Seton Hall University. His education was interrupted when he was drafted and served in the United States Army for two years. He married Brigid Sherlock of Sligo, Ireland on January 11, 1958. They had six children. Mr. Hanley worked for Western Electric as a supervisor for twenty-three years. Following, he owned and operated O'Hanly Log Cabin in Budd Lake, NJ. He was then employed by the US Postal Service in Whippany, NJ for eight years. Upon retirement, Mr. Hanley and his wife moved from Whippany to Seaside Heights and then Toms River, NJ where she is currently residing. During his adult life he was busy with a number of clubs and organizations. He served as the president of the Irish American Association of North West New Jersey; a treasurer of the Ancient Order of Hibernians; a treasurer of the Knights of Columbus; a member of the Cuchullian Pipe Band; a member of New Outlook Pioneers; a member of Bearkley Irish Club and the Boochie Club. While in Whippany he was a member of St. Anne's in Parsippany and more recently as a member of St. Maximilliam Kolbe Church. James had a love of all things Irish. He married an Irish colleen, loved to listen to Irish music and enjoyed good times with his family and friends. He was a family man of the finest character. He attended church regularly and gave of himself to others often. He had a huge impact on many a home and many a heart. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Surviving are his wife Brigid; five sons, James F., Patrick J., Brian M. Kevin S., Sean P; a daughter, Tara H. Mathiesen; his brother Patrick J. Hanley and 20 grandchildren, Maeve, Maura, Paige, Patrick, Deirde, Liam, Monique, Elizabeth, Megan, Brendan, Fiona, Conall, Aidan, Aine, Mairead, Deiredre, Brigid, James, Joshua and Judah. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 1, 2008 from 4 to 8 PM at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd, Toms River, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be offered Monday, 11:30 AM at St. Maximilliam Kolbe Church. Interment will be in the New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.
